M34

The M34 ,also known as the "Leder-B-Maske", is a gas mask made out of leather. It was produced from 1925 until 1935 by Dreager and Auer/Degea in Germany and Liga, Dreager-Wien, Strager-Hagel, Jackobson, Ditmar and Erje in Austria.
The M34 saw use in the Military as well as the fire service, the mining industry and in industrial operations.
The manufacturers mark is situated on a triangular leather plate inside the mask also on the exhale valve. However, the first masks issued to the Austrian Army were issued without exhale valves, due to fogging problems older masks were retrofitted with exhale valves, therefore it is possible that the mask and exhale valve be made by two different manufacturers.
A defining Feature of the M34 series are their egg shaped lenses. Although rare, some M34's were manufactured with round lenses instead of egg shaped ones.
Many M34 masks were seized before the beginning of the second world war and issued to the German Army. The Military M34's had green painted curved filter connection pieces, an acceptance stamp "HBA" - "Heeres-Bekleidungs-Amt" (Army Clothing Office) under the face seal and an other head harness compared to the civilian model.
Dependingon the original intended use of civilian vesrions of the mask, they may be seen with or without exhale valves and filter connectors
